Building an indoor basketball court

Indoor courts go in basements, garages, pole barns, home gyms, schools and churches. The building is the big cost; the court itself is the floor, hoops, lines and lighting. A maple hardwood floor typically costs $12 to $26 per sq ft, which is $56,400 to $122,200 for a 94 by 50 foot court, while sport tiles or a converted garage cost far less. When an indoor court makes sense

  • You have a pole barn, large garage or basement with enough height and clear floor.
  • Winters, rain or heat would stop you playing outside for months of the year.
  • You are building a new home or addition and can plan the space from the start.
  • A school, church or club needs a gym floor replaced or a new court in a hall.
  • You want a court that doubles as a home gym or multi-sport room.

What a good quote includes

Ask for these six points in writing. Two quotes that cover them can be compared line by line.

  1. Ceiling height

The rim is 10 feet up and shots arc well above it. Ask the builder to check your clear height before anything else.

  2. Subfloor

A flat, dry concrete slab, with a moisture test and vapor barrier where a wood floor is going in.

  3. Floor system

Maple strip floor on a sprung or padded subfloor, sport tiles, or a poured or roll synthetic floor.

  4. Hoops

Wall-mounted, ceiling-hung or portable, with the structure checked for the load.

  5. Lighting and air

Even, glare-free lighting and ventilation so the room does not overheat or sweat.

  6. Walls and padding

Padding on walls close to the baseline, and protection for windows and lights.

How an indoor court is usually built

  1. Check the space

Clear height, slab condition, moisture, access and where hoops can be fixed.

  2. Prepare the slab

Leveling, moisture testing and any vapor barrier or subfloor the floor system needs.

  3. Install the floor

Wood is acclimated, laid, sanded and finished; tiles click together over the slab.

  4. Lines, hoops and lights

Game lines are painted or inlaid, hoops are mounted and lighting is set up.

Questions people ask

How much does an indoor basketball court cost?

It depends most on whether you already have the building. HomeAdvisor puts converting an unused garage or pole barn at $1,900 to $14,400. A maple floor alone runs $12 to $26 per sq ft, according to Kiefer USA.

How high should the ceiling be for an indoor court?

There is no single US code figure for homes. The rim sits 10 feet up, and shots rise well above it, so the higher the better. Ask the builder to check your clear height before you plan the floor.

What flooring do indoor basketball courts use?

Schools and arenas use maple hardwood on a sprung subfloor. Homes and multi-use rooms often use modular sport tiles or synthetic floors, which cost less and are easier to fit over an existing slab.

Can I put a basketball court in my garage?

Yes, if there is room to shoot. A typical two-car garage is too low for a full arc, but works for a hoop and shooting drills with tiles over the slab.

How long does a maple gym floor last?

Many decades with care. Maple floors are sanded and refinished periodically, and the lines repainted at the same time.
